The Short History of Ginger Ale - Tayport Distillery

The Story Behind Your Favourite Mixer - Ginger Ale

What's the story behind one of the world's most well-known mixers? Ginger ale's history is more diverse and intriguing than you might think, with roots in medicinal brews, transatlantic voyages, and even Prohibition-era cocktails.

Originally brewed in England around the 1800s as a fermented concoction of ginger, sugar, and water, ginger beer soon found a sibling across the Irish Sea: ginger ale. Unlike its fermented counterpart, ginger ale was simply carbonated water flavoured with ginger. This key difference meant ginger ale was non-alcoholic, while ginger beer often had a slight kick.

In the early 1900s, ginger ale made its way across the Atlantic, quickly becoming a beloved soft drink in Canada. John McLaughlin, an innovative pharmacist, reimagined the Irish-style ginger ale, creating the iconic Canada Dry Ginger Ale we know today. Two distinct types emerged: Golden Ginger Ale, known for its rich colour and pronounced ginger flavour, and Dry Ginger Ale, the lighter and more subtle version that dominates the market today.

A Prohibition-Era Secret Weapon

During the Prohibition era in the United States, ginger ale's popularity soared. Its ability to mask the smell of alcohol made it the perfect mixer for illicit cocktails. This clandestine use further cemented ginger ale's place in mixology history.

But ginger ale wasn't just for cocktails. Its ginger content, known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, also made it a popular home remedy for ailments like nausea and indigestion.
